Top news in the air cargo sector today

  • Air freight between China and the United States has collapsed.

The removal of the "de minimis" customs exemption for low-value shipments from China and Hong Kong has caused a massive decline in transatlantic air freight traffic, with capacity in the affected countries falling by nearly 30%.

This change has led to a rerouting of some cargo to ocean freight and has prompted major companies like Cathay Pacific and others to adjust their strategies.

  • A remarkable recovery has been witnessed at Britain's East Midlands Airport.

East Midlands Airport recorded a jump in air cargo volume of more than 19% during July, outperforming Heathrow, which achieved a growth of just 2.7%.

This is attributed to its strategic location between Derby and Nottingham, its extensive operating capacity, and its lower costs for departure times.

  • Geopolitical pressures are driving up freight rates.

India has been under pressure due to the tensions between Iran and Israel. These tensions are expected to lead to higher air and ocean freight costs, due to increased insurance premiums and their impact on transportation routes and supply chains.
